Julia Took, an unusually under height child, is starting to feel miserable during the summer.  She constantly thinks of Ramon, her dead dog, and also her friends who were out of town.  Suddenly, her mom makes her and her brother audition for The Wizard of Oz  (which she really, sincerely didn’t want to do), she meets her odd next door neighbor, and starts to make a scrapbook, a surprising hope opens up inside of her: maybe, just maybe, her summer will start to get better.  I love Short because when something brazenly obvious (to the reader) is about to happen, Julia makes the opposite occur.  If I were the author, there is not one part of this book I would change because Short has been written so perfectly, so fluently, that one change would destroy the story.  If I were a character in the book, I would not have solved the problem any differently because the way it was done was very smartly and properly fixed, and the director got better in the end.  If I could pick one juicy word to describe this book, it would be ingenious because the author used the story in such a way that it has a purpose, and is extremely creative with the characters and plot.  You should read Short because it is wonderful for any person of any age.
